The Ideology of Love

Digital prints on silk 84 x 94 cm

Spomenik of the former Yugoslavia and Nazi bunkers along the Atlantic Wall…
Concrete constructions from the 20th century, which connote and redefine the landscape of various spots in European continent. They may allude to a certain ideology, opposed to each other, through their aesthetic appearance. Or stated another way, they have been created from positions of power, belonging to the warlike imaginary, and motivated by that opposition to an other; currently their aesthetic resolutions have been associated with a certain ideology, supposedly opposed. In the case of bunkers, this conception is more abstract given that these constructions have been used over the world wherever there has been a war. However, I focus my attention on the European perspective, where I live and my knowledge is. In the case of the spomenik, a term that translates as ‘monuments’, they have an evident commemorative function, which not only alludes to an ideology attached to the form of government of their time, but are also capable of bringing together the projection of a common identity in very complex territories.
All of them are concrete constructions built and ordered to be built by men. Even its imposing presence, if it was given a gender, we would say that it is culturally constructed and perceived as something masculine. From an interest in historical memory and from a certain ecofeminist prism, I propose a personal reading of various locations where spomenik and bunkers can be found. I want ‘love’ to be my motivation and the work methodology through which I can symbolically traverse and explore the history of our continent, to allow us a re-reading through contemporary art, and open the possibility to some other stories. I understand that love has to do with desire and fascination, but also with affection, care and repair. It is from there where I have wanted to operate from.
